Okay, it's good to see Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves working together again. Last movie I saw them act with each other was Freaked. They genuinely seem to be good friends and they play these characters well. It looks like they had a lot of fun making this.
Bill and Ted movies really don't need to be spot on with time travel and issues with creating alternate timelines. So that's really not a problem. It's a story about two aged surfer dues who travel in time. Brain turned off and that's okay.
As charming as Bill and Ted's characters are, the rest of the characters are out of place for this movie. The daughters are carbon copies of their dad's which is sad. Rather than making them act just like their dads, it would have been better to see them be different. Maybe smarter, maybe not interested, whatever. We have two talented actresses who don't get to shine as their own characters. I appreciate that they love their dads, but their inclusion doesn't really matter because they are just carbon copies of Bill and Ted. May as well have had Bill and Ted go back in time, get the young "us's" and have them play the character.
The future "us's" were not as fun as I hoped. I can see Winter's selling it, but it always fell short. He's a funny actor in a lot of great films. Problem is, his humor doesn't work as well. He's the most expressive of the two and he tries to sell it, but it doesn't really work. It comes off as corny. They tried though.
The future is the worst part of the movie. Bad design, the characters aren't interesting, and their existence is only there to get the time travel into the story. They could easily have had the entire story setup done by Kristen Schaal. That's how unimportant the future was in this story.
So, the movie doesn't work. There are a lot fun ideas and cute jokes, but nothing memorable. In the end, it's just a nostalgia grab that tries to be fun like the original but ends up falling flat. Especially the final music show. I actually cringed at the whole thing.
Some complaints are about the daughters taking over. I didn't care about that since the movie is still about Bill and Ted. Especially since the daughters are just carbon copies of the dads.
I hope others enjoy the movie more than I did. These guys put a lot of good work, costumes, sets, and effort into the film. It just doesn't work for this reviewer. Be excellent to each other.
